Ipswich man Colin Robertson has been dubbed the ‘Miracle Man’ and with good reason.
The 40 year old who came horribly close to death when his truck lost brakes eight weeks ago slamming into a tree, today walked from the PA Hospital aided by a walking frame.
“I don’t remember the crash, which is good for my recovery, but I know if it wasn’t for the CareFlight crew I may not be here today, I certainly wouldn’t have my legs,” said Colin Robertson.
When the RACQ CareFlight crew arrived at the scene in the Gold Coast Hinterland, Colin was trapped between a power pole and his truck losing excessive amounts of blood.
“He was in a very bad way, you couldn’t tell what was legs and what was metal, it was all intertwined and was quite shocking to witness, said RACQ CareFlight Paramedic Darrin Hatchman.
In a race against time Colin was pulled from the wreck alive, but only just. RACQ CareFlight Doctor Renee Beer intubated him on the side of the road and gave him three units of blood.
“It was the worst lower limb injury I had ever seen, he is so lucky to have his legs, I honestly didn’t think he would keep them. It was an extraordinary team effort from all emergency services involved, said Dr Beer.
Two months since the accident and Colin has made a miraculous recovery. Over eight operations Trauma Surgeon Dr Wullschleger reconstructed the 40 year old’s legs.
“It was a serious possibility we would need to amputate. He suffered major blood loss, it’s amazing he can walk again, said Dr Wullschleger.
The RACQ CareFlight crew are amazed by Colin’s progress. Just weeks after the accident when the crew visited him in hospital Colin had no idea who they were, but was thrilled when they explained the reason for the visit.
“I still remember Dr Renee’s enormous smile as she walked towards my bed, I can’t thank the entire CareFlight crew enough, said Colin.
