Bushwalker Winched 80 Metres to Safety

The RACQ CareFlight Helicopter was the only way out this afternoon for a 52 yr old bushwalker, who broke his ankle deep within the Lamington National Park.

CareFlight's doctor and paramedic were lowered down into the thick bushland at 2pm.  The man was assessed for other injuries before being stretcher winched into the helicopter.

"He was in a tough spot, the canopy was extremely high so we had to winch from about 80 metres, which certainly has its challenges," said RACQ CareFlight Aircrewman, Luke Pagano.

It's believed the man was walking with a large group of people when he fell, badly breaking his right ankle.

"The man's foot got stuck underneath a root of tree. As he fell he heard a crack and looked down to see that his ankle had abnormally rotated," said CareFlight's Dr Schonewille.

The patient was airlifted to the Gold Coast Hospital in a stable condition.
