CAREFLIGHT GIVES STUDENTS THE CHANCE TO FLY

Some high school students get a rush from skateboarding or surfing, but a growing number of Gold Coast teens are now enjoying the pleasures of open air space to get their kicks.

Gold Coast based RACQ CareFlight Rescue has established a partnership with Palm Beach-Currumbin High School to enhance the learning experiences of students engaged in aerospace studies.

CareFlight will be working with the school to provide work experience placements, review and refine the curriculum and most importantly CareFlight’s staff will make themselves available as real and experienced industry contacts for students looking at a career in aviation.

Dean Minchington, Chief Operating Officer of CareFlight Global says the CareFlight crew is excited about inspiring the next generation on aviators.

“This is a great opportunity for our engineers, pilots and air crewmen to share their wealth of knowledge.  Our staff members have a lot to offer the students as far as practical experience goes, and they will be able to offer sound advice about pathways into an aviation career,” he said.

The Aerospace Project commenced in January 2004 as a partnership between Education Queensland, Boeing Australia Limited and Aviation Australia.  The aim of the Project is to create pathways for students into Queensland’s growing aerospace industries.

After being offered in just six schools 5 years ago, Aerospace Studies was offered at 17 schools across Queensland in 2008, a figure which will continue to grow with the addition of new schools to the Project in 2009.

Aerospace Studies provides students with an opportunity to gain an understanding of the underlying concepts and principles of aviation and aerospace.  It is concerned with concepts related to the design, construction, operations and maintenance of aircraft and spacecraft; the safety systems that have been developed to ensure the safe operation of the aviation and aerospace industries; the structures and management of aviation and aerospace businesses; and various factors that affect day-to-day aviation operations.
