A CareFlight doctor had no choice but to perform an emergency surgical procedure at the scene of an accident to save a man's life this afternoon.
The father of two crashed his dirt bike at speed just north of Crow's Nest, smashing his pelvis and crushing his windpipe.
When the RACQ CareFlight chopper landed at the motocross park the man was in a critical condition and deteriorating rapidly. Dr Chris Cheeseman was forced to perform an emergency tracheotomy to open the patient's airway.
The 44 year old also had serious chest injuries, including multiple broken ribs. Chest tubes then had to be inserted into the patient's chest to allow fluid to drain from both lungs.
"It was a significant undertaking in the field, but the patient his hanging in there now at Royal Brisbane Hospital so that's all that matters," said Dr Cheeseman.
The patient's daughter has thanked Dr Cheeseman for saving her dad's life.
At the time of the accident the 44 year old man was riding with his 15 year old son. The RACQ CareFlight Rescue crew has praised the teenager for his maturity as they worked to save his dad's life.
"He actually helped treat his dad yet remained very mature and composed the entire time," said Dr Cheeseman.
